Weekly Reflection #2 5/22/22 After a successful first week, I was excited to dive into a second week of more professional interviews. These interviews included an old sports psychologist I used to work with in Colorado, the sports psychologist at Proctor, and the head of the DP2 (Dartmouth Peak Performance) at Dartmouth College. These interviews gave me an interesting point of view of the study of sports psychology, where I was talking to the professionals about the strategies they use with athletes and how they became a certified professional. Some of the strategies I had heard before, such as breathing, visualization, and journaling. Other strategies were mental congruence, as well as a device called the Inner Balance. Along with strategies, the interviewees spoke on the two different routes to becoming a sports psychologist, one that went right through college, and the other that was an after college program that allowed them to start with clinical psychology and then move int...
5/21/22 10:15 PM I finally got around to looking into some of the books I was recommended throughout my countless interviews in the last two weeks. The two that stood out to me were “ Mind Gym “ and “ Living in the Sweet Spot”. These books focus on mental health and mental excellence in sports and were very interesting through the first few chapters. I am preparing also for my final interviews as well as compiling my research so I am ready for next week.  2 Hours on Books  1 Hour on Research
5/20/22 10:00 PM  Today was more of a study and listening to podcast day before my interviews on Monday and Tuesday. I listened to the podcast that the Dartmouth doctor recommended for me, and did some research on some of the strategies he usually recommends to his student athletes he works with.  2 Hours Researching his breathing strategies  2 Hours listening to the Podcast
5/19/22 11:00  Today I had my interview with the head of DP2 at Dartmouth College. It was an amazing interview and I was very happy to finally interview him. He has a PHD from UVA in Clinical Psychology and a masters from Dartmouth in Sports Psychology. He gave me some very interesting topics to look into and gave me his story and also the average day as a sports psychologist at a major university. We also discussed the different routes to becoming a sports psychologist through Dartmouth as well as many other universities in the US.  1:30 Interview 1:30 listening to his podcast he recommended 1 hour looking into the books he recommended
5/18/22 10:00 PM Today was my lakes region final day for golf. Before this though, I did my research and listened to my podcast that my previous interview told me to listen to before our next meeting. I listened to a podcast about an ex NHL players mental struggles and researched some of the topics we discussed. I also prepared for my Dartmouth interview tomorrow with their head of sports psychology and am very excited to meet with him.  2 Hours on Podcast and Research for Proctor Faculty  1 Hour on research for Dartmouth tomorrow
5/17/22 10:27 PM Today I interviewed a proctor faculty member and she gave me some really cool insight into some of the stuff she has been focusing on this year. She brought up some terms I've been studying as well as some other ones to look into. She also recommended me a podcast to listen to that gave me a really cool insight into a pro athletes mental struggles and how they tried to remedy them. We are planning to meet again on Thursday after I look into some of the stuff she mentioned during the interview.  Interview 1 hour  Podcast 2 Hours  Athletic application 2 hours
5/16/22 7:30 PM Today was day one of interviewing people inside the profession and I thought it went very well. The interview flowed well and I can't wait to carry it on and interview a proctor faculty tomorrow about some of the work she does on and off campus and how she got into the profession. Overall today was a good day and I feel as though if this week can go as smoothly as today, it will be a success.  1 hour interview  2 hour research before tomorrow  1 hour rewriting questions for future interviews
Weekly Reflection 1 5/15/22 This week was the first week of my deep dive into Sports Psychology. This week I learned a lot about some of my fellow student athletes through interviewing them about their experiences with the mental side of sports as well as some of their tendencies during a game. We also discussed some of the strategies we use and I heard some new ones that I researched like breathing to increase heart rate before a shift. One other strategy I heard many times was visualization, and using visualization to imagine exactly what you want to do. Using these strategies, many kids expressed that they performed much better compared to just trying to play without doing these things. Another thing I focused on was the idea of composure, as I mentioned in a daily blog, multiple different kids mentioned the word composure in our interview and I spent a while diving into this word and its meaning to sports psychology and sports as a whole. I loved what I did this week and I am ...
5/14/22 8:45 PM Today I had my first professional interview for my project. It was nice to ask the questions and give some examples that I had prepared over the past week. I learned some interesting things that I can take into my more official interviews next week. I also got some things I can research as well as ask the next interviewee. Overall today went well and it is just a small insight into next week.  2 hours doing interview prep/ interview 2 hours using strategies learned with fellow students  2 hours on course being competitive but trying to maintain the strategies discussed
5/13/22 9:45 PM Today was a wild day and unfortunately I did very little work on senior project. I got a new phone then had my senior goof match which allowed for very little time to work. I plan on incorporating the hours I missed today over the next two weeks.
5/12/22 10:49 PM  Today I focused on an element of the podcast I listened to and a thing I did not have yesterday in my golf match, and that is composure. I lost my composure on the course yesterday and allowed the person I was playing to come back into the match. The podcast described composure as the ability to do the everyday under pressure, and from first hand experiences and interviews I have conducted this words seems to be brought up a lot. Overall was an interesting day, and I saw first hand today on the course what happens when someone loses their composure as a golfer broke a club near our group.  2 Hours on composure podcast/research  2 hours interviewing fellow students on tools for composure and their experiences with when composure is loss.
5/11/22 10:35 PM Today was a tough day, and I saw all the things I've read about the past few days come into my life personally. I did not perform on the golf links and got severally rattled. I tried to use some of the exercises I've studied but they did not seem to help today. During the day I helped another student in their senior project and had some fun. Then I went back home and researched one of my interviews for next week and read their professional works. Overall was an interesting but productive day.  2 Hours with other senior project kids  2 hours application of skills during sports with teammates   1 hour talk with team about personal experiences with sports psychology
5/10/22 10:17 PM Today I got my first taste at interviewing and learning about peoples minds during sports with my golf team. I asked two of the kids on my team about half of the questions and I was blown away at their different ideas when it comes to mental strength during sports. One of them preferred to be hyped up and excited during golf and really loose where as the other was adamant on being calm and locked in on every shot he took. After golf I had a fire and talked to some of the lacrosse players about their strategies. Overall was a good test day for the interview questions and my first crack at interviewing people in the future.  2 Hours Interviewing 1 1/2 Hour Fire and Talk  30 minute Research on Ideas involving breathing and heart rate for focus
5/9/22 9:27PM Today was the first day of senior project and for me personally, it was a day of preparation and planning for my interviews which will be done over the course of the next two weeks. I wrote 25 interview questions and listened to two episode of the mental dive podcast. The mental dive podcast is owned by one of the people I plan on interviewing and the host speaks on Sports Psychology, as well as interviewing an athlete and getting their perspective on how they deal with adversity and the overall mental side of sports. Today was a great starting point and I cannot wait for the interviews and the research that develops out of these questions.  Time Spent Today:  2 hours on questions and planning  2 hours on podcast 2 hours on application of strategies learned during podcast
